School Event
Chinese New Year 2008
by Ms Shanna

In order to raise children’s knowledge of Chinese New Year, we enabled them to have a closer look at the meaning and origin of Chinese New Year and to discover the special representation of each food item, custom and action taken during the occasion. SIS students and Chinese teachers did a lot of preparation for this New Year:

  • Students were taught how to make handcraft, such as firecracker, lanterns, paper-cut, and hongbao.
  • Students were made to understand why Chinese need to write spring festival scrolls, and how to write.
  • Students did an IDP on Chinese New Year.
  • There was a party.
Chinese New Year-IDP plays an important role in this New Year celebration. Each level had following topics:
  • P1 “Special purchases for the Spring Festival”
  • P2 “Beautiful lantern festival”
  • P3 “New year painting”
  • P4 “Chinese Shio
  • P5 “Chinese traditional culture-spring festival”
  • P6 “spring festival scrolls”
  • S1 & S3 “The custom during Chinese new year”
  • S2&S4 “Celebrate Chinese New Year & Welcome Olympics”
All these helped students understand:
A. Why Chinese people celebrate Chinese New Year,
B. Why the date of celebrating Chinese New Year is different every year.,
C. Why the Chinese wear red during Chinese New Year,
D. Why two oranges are exchanged when visiting a family during Chinese New Year,
E. Why the kitchen God plays an important role during Chinese New Year,
F. What the Chinese can and cannot do during Chinese New Year.
The most important thing was learning about Chinese Culture and tradition.
